Iran says Trump offer of talks is 'humiliation', without value

Trump Says He’s Willing to Meet With Iranian President With ‘No Preconditions’

US President Donald Trump on Monday offered to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani without any preconditions, at any time he wants.

Speaking during a news conference at the White House, the U.S. president said he would meet the Iranians "any time they want to".

'No preconditions, no. If they want to meet, I'll meet anytime they want, anytime they want,' he said.

In May, Trump - who has made Iran his public enemy number one - announced the U.S. withdrawal from what he called a "defective" multinational nuclear deal with Tehran, and moved to reinstate punishing sanctions. He has vowed to ramp up sanctions until Iran radically changes its regional policies, including its support for regional militant groups, something the country's leaders have long refused to do.

"I'll meet with anybody", he said.

Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the head of influential parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, suggested a US return to the nuclear deal, which would bring an end to the economic uncertainty, would be needed before Tehran could think of negotiating. "Good for the country, good for them, good for us and good for the world".

Aboutalebi said Iran had showed its openness to dialogue in the past, particularly with the phone call between Rouhani and Trump's predecessor Barack Obama in 2013.

"There can be no negotiations with the Americans raising the issue of talks from the position of power", he was quoted as saying on the website of the Iranian parliament, calling Trump's decision to pull out of the nuclear deal the "biggest blow to diplomacy". "If they want to meet, I'll meet".

Trump pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear deal in May, and is set to reimpose full sanctions in two stages in August and November.

On July 23, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington was not afraid to sanction top-ranking leaders of the "nightmare" Iranian regime.

In spite of fierce verbal exchanges between Tehran and Washington in the recent weeks, Iranian authorities have kept the door to diplomacy open.

Iranian figures familiar with policymaking say, as a faltering economy and a sliding currency stir street protests, that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could consider diplomacy with Washington and drink from "the chalice of poison", a reference to the phrase used by his predecessor Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini when he reluctantly agreed to a United Nations -mediated truce that ended the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

A senior aide to Rouhani said the only way back to talks was for Washington to return to the nuclear agreement. "So many things have happened so positive", Trump said.
