Scientists discover 12 new Jupiter moons, describe one as an "oddball"

12 new moons spotted around Jupiter – but one may destroy them all

Even though these are objects in our own solar system, the observations were challenging. There is one other moon orbiting Jupiter that has the same rotation, but Valetudo orbits further away from the planet so its unorthodox movement is more baffling.

Jupiter's tally of moons just got a little bit larger. Other than that, not much is known about it or the other confirmed moons.

That seems to be what happened to astronomers working at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, where a planned survey of trans-Neptunian objects was interrupted by Jupiter.

Nine of the 10 new moons orbit in a retrograde direction, that is, opposite direction of Jupiter's spin.

PALCA: Many of Jupiter's moons form from the same spinning disk of stuff that eventually coalesce to form the planet.

Images of the oddball moon - now called Valetudo - from the Magellan telescope in Chile in May, 2018.

Closest to the planet are the four small "inner irregulars", named Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea and Thebe.

There have also been reports of brief scuffles and small-scale protests in recent weeks although not of mass demonstrations. And not that you want to hurt anybody, but that regime wouldn't let the people know that we are behind them 100 percent.

The moons Sheppard spied are farther-flung and tiny, each no more than two miles in diameter.

This screencapture shows the prograde moons of Jupiter, including the two newest discoveries. If a moon circles in the same direction as a planet's rotation, that moon's orbit is called prograde.

Most of the prograde moons orbit much closer to the planet than the retrograde moons do. With technology advancing at the rate it is, we are on the cusp of a major breakthrough in human space exploration, and taking the next step towards a better understanding of the last frontier. The center used the Carnegie insitute's observations to calculate the orbits of the newly found moons.

"Our other discovery is a real oddball and has an orbit like no other known Jovian moon", Sheppard explained. While Jupiter, the fifth planet from the Sun, has large moons such as Ganymede - the biggest in the solar system with a diameter of 3,273 miles (5,268 km) - the new ones range in size from about six-tenths of a mile (1 km) to 2.5 miles (4 km). "It is moving prograde while all the other objects at a similar distance from Jupiter are moving retrograde". It moves in the opposite direction relative to the outer retrograde satellites of the group, crossing their orbits. These take two years to orbit the planet.

Scott Sheppard: "Jupiter now has 79 known moons in the solar system". "Head-on collisions would quickly break apart and grind the objects down to dust."Some of Jupiter's moons and moon groupings, including the "oddball", could have formed from collisions like this, according to the statement".

Valetudo's idiosyncratic path increases the likelihood that it will one day stray into the path of another moon and collide with it.

Elucidating the complex influences that shaped a moon's orbital history can teach scientists about our Solar System's early years. They're thought to have formed after the gas and dust from the earliest stages of planetary formation had dissipated.
