Roger Federer determined to have another shot at Wimbledon after Anderson shock

Eight-time champion Roger Federer was sensationally knocked out of Wimbledon on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) by South African giant Kevin Anderson while Rafael Nadal edged Juan Martin del Potro in a Centre Court epic and will meet Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Federer's match point arrived when Anderson served at 4-5 in the third but, with the South African looming at the net, he made a hash of an attempted backhand pass. I just asked him whether he thought honestly that I damaged the court with the racket. The ball was there to be hit. I decided not to go. Had a good first serve, as well.

"As exciting as it is, I feel like I'm doing a good job of keeping it in perspective", he said.

"I feel the few times I've played him in the past, I've walked on court without the necessary belief that I needed to get through the match", 32-year-old Anderson, one of only two Africans in the men's singles draw, told reporters.

"I just kept on telling myself that I had to keep on believing". The big-serving American made it to his first semi-final at his 41st attempt.

In fact, he had lost all 10 sets he played against the Swiss in their prior meetings.

"I didn't think that was ever going to happen, to be honest".

Thousands Protest Against Trump in London
On Friday he rephrased his account, saying that he had given "a suggestion" to May over Brexit, not advice. He said "the deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on".

Roger Federer branded his performance as "average" after missed opportunities cost him in his epic Wimbledon quarter-final loss to Kevin Anderson. Beating Roger here at Wimbledon is something I'm going to remember. "Coming into this event definitely felt just a more quiet confidence of going further in it than I had in the past".

You know, [Marco] Cecchinato at the French Open was a match he felt he should have won and then get to the finals, he had a match point at Queen's and he's sticking with it. Is it getting broken at five-all after that?

Three-time champion Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, reached his first semi-final at the majors in more than two years by seeing off Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

It will be a clash of giants, with Anderson (6ft 8in) slightly shorter than the 6ft 10in Isner. "I don't think it's fair but it is what it is".

"Especially over the last 52 weeks". But he's very consistent with the two.

"I have already gotten tons of messages from support back home", Anderson said.

Isner leads their head-to-head encounters 8-3 on the ATP World Tour. Ostapenko, playing in the last four for the first time here, will never die wondering as she goes for her shots with extreme power from the back of court, while Kerber, the 2016 runner-up, is more measured, can soak up pressure and is less erratic. It's a match that's often won on just a couple points here and there.

Anderson admitted he was "unsettled" in the opening exchanges, but though two sets down, with his serve under-par, Anderson then re-tuned and started to cause Federer all sorts of trouble, both with his serve and from the baseline. At the same time, because he's such a big player, has so much firepower, you just can't be too patient. He touched post-match on an injury-ravaged 2016, and how his coaching team and nearest and dearest put him back together.
