The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group said in a separate statement that a truce had been reached.

Media reports said that Egyptian intelligence services had contacted the Hamas leadership in Gaza to try to prevent a further escalation of violence. A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not respond to a request for comment.

The army added that 91 rockets were allegedly fired from Gaza to the Israeli side since morning.

In a statement, the military said Hamas' activities "violate Israeli sovereignty, endanger Israeli civilians and sabotage Israel's humanitarian efforts that aim to help Gazan civilians".

Israel has targeted the Gaza Strip with a series of strikes. The military said it identified about 60 launches of rockets and mortars from Gaza toward Israeli territory, of which about 10 were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system.

The Israeli army said it carried out the strikes on Saturday, with its fighter jets targeting "complexes used to prepare arson terror attacks and a Hamas terror training facility". Gaza's Health ministry said two teenagers were killed in the strike and ten others injured.

Gaza militants often vacate potential target sites during flare-ups and Israelis who live in villages and towns near the border have reinforced rooms in their homes and rocket sirens that alert of an incoming attack.

"We are talking about the biggest offensive strikes since Protective Edge", Brigadier General Tzvika Haimovic told journalists, referring to Israel's name for its 2014 operation in the Gaza Strip.

Home to 2 million Palestinians, more than half of them war refugees and their descendants, Gaza has suffered deep poverty with vital infrastructure collapsing under a 12-year blockade by Israel, which says its aim is to curb security threats by Hamas.

Later, the Israeli military claimed an officer was wounded by a grenade.

Witnesses say Israeli warplanes dropped four bombs on an empty building near a Hamas police and security compound, reducing the old structure to rubble.

The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident, which has been cited as one of the most grave since the start of the violence at the southern border in March.

The majority were involved in protests and clashes but others were seeking to breach or damage the border fence.

Since the protests began on March 30, at least 138 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, with more than 160,000 wounded.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said the latest Israeli sortie, the third of the day, struck some 40 Hamas targets including tunnels, logistical centers and a Hamas battalion headquarters.

The Israeli army killed two Palestinians, including a teenage boy, and wounded hundreds at protests along the fence with Israel on Friday.
