Trump Tapping $12B to Help Farmers Affected by Tariffs

Mr Trump has said his tariffs - which he described in a Tweet as "the greatest" - are meant to pressure countries to change their policies toward United States exports.

U.S. President Donald Trump is reiterating his threat to impose tariffs on countries that treat the U.S. unfairly when it comes to trade. It's as simple as that - and everybody's talking!

The US will also buy crops such as fruits and nuts, distributing them to food banks and other government nutrition programmes. "All will be Great!"

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says the plan will help a broad number of farmers deal with the cost of "disruptive markets" as USA trading partners have retaliated for President Donald Trump's tariffs on imported goods.

Industry groups that represent agriculture, as well as politicians from agricultural states, have criticised the tariffs. Per-bushel soybean prices were already falling, dropping 19 percent since early May to a 10-year low and corn is down more than 15 percent.

Axios notes the bailout is being advertised as "temporary", but that, too, was the original idea with the tariffs that produced the retaliatory actions by China that have created the most heartburn in the heartland.

The effort, reportedly requested by Canada , the USA and several European Union countries, moved the civilians to Jordan. In 2017, a Netflix documentary about the group, " The White Helmets ", won the Oscar for best documentary short.

Trump has placed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, saying they pose a threat to USA national security, an argument that allies such as the European Union and Canada reject. After $34 billion in tariffs against China went into effect earlier this month, China responded with its own equivalent tariffs soon after, targeting USA agricultural products including soy, corn, wheat, pork, poultry and more.

As just one example of how farmers are impacted, China used to import $1 billion worth of American-grown sorghum annually, which made up 77 percent of all US sorghum exports. Farmers in Iowa alone could lose as much as $624 million on soybean shipments to China, Donnelle Eller, an agriculture reporter with the Des Moines Register, told CBSN last month.

Speaking at the Heritage Foundation, Johnson said these trade disputes "could just totally run out of control" and likened them to "throwing a hand grenade of uncertainty" into the economy. The U.S. and China have threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs next week on $16 billion of each other's goods.

The Trump administration has slapped tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods in a dispute over Beijing's high-tech industrial policies.

Some of the companies invited to set up their products inside the White House say they were both surprised and honored to have been asked to participate.
