BREAKING Assassination attempt at ED Chiwenga in Byo

ZANU-PF chairwoman and cabinet minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and Mary Chiwenga, the wife of vice president Chiwenga, were also among those injured, he said, as was deputy parliament speaker Mabel Chinomona.

The explosive device, which appears to have been thrown detonated just as Mnangagwa and his entourage were alighting from the stage soon after addressing the campaign rally.

Mnangagwa, who has survived numerous attempts on his life, has described the blast as a "senseless act of violence and cowardice".

Several security personnel were also hurt, the state-owned Herald newspaper said.

Mnangagwa told state broadcaster ZBC, without elaborating, that those responsible must have come from "outside Bulawayo".

Zimbabweans will go the polls June 30 in their first election since long-serving President Robert Mugabe was forced from office in a military coup.

He said the incident will not stop him from forging ahead with his campaigning ahead of general elections scheduled for July 30.

She says she can't imagine being torn from her mother's arms. "That's all we need", Curbelo said. "That is not what we stand for". The Kansas Republican spent 90 minutes at the center and described it as a camp providing good food and medical care.

The intervention by the army was led by Chiwenga who was then head of the armed forces.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that Egypt stands by the brotherly people and government of Zimbabwe and their efforts to achieve stability and safety in their country.

But over the years, as tensions rose over who would succeed the 94-year-old, the system broke into factions.

Mnangagwa has pledged "peaceful, free, fair and credible elections" and called for peace and unity after the attack.

Previous elections in Zimbabwe had been marred by electoral fraud, intimidation and violence, including the killing of scores of opposition supporters in 2008.

"This is going to make everyone a little bit tense. this is the first time we have seen such a blatant attack", she said blaming divisions inside the ruling ZANU-PF for the attack. Any delays in bringing this matter to finality, as has been the case with other related attacks on the private media and opposition politicians, would cast aspersions on the State's commitment to breaking the cycle of violence.
