Key Republican Trey Gowdy defends FBI against Trump attacks

The pressure President Trump put on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reverse his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation extended beyond the March 2017 Mar-a-Lago conversation reported by the New York Times this week.

Sessions' decision to recuse himself ultimately resulted in the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee a probe that includes investigating possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

"There are lots of really good lawyers in this country", he added.

Congressman Trey Gowdy has been making the talk show rounds for the past few days, going on air to dispute President Donald Trump's repeated claim that a spy 'infiltrated' his 2016 campaign.

It wasn't the first time Trump has publicly criticized Sessions, dating back to a year ago, when the former Alabama senator recused himself from the investigation into Russian activities during the 2016 presidential race.

Gowdy said the problem wasn't necessarily that there had been any wrongdoing in that case but that Sessions hadn't said before he became attorney general that he felt he couldn't take part in the matter. At times, the departing president took the long view, at other points, he flashed anger.

Gowdy and House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., received a secret briefing last week about the FBI's use of the confidential human source.

Trump was also told that the Russian government was trying to meddle in the election and that Russia played a direct role in hacks against the Democratic National Committee, NBC News reported in October 2016.

Responding to Fishman's statement on Wednesday , Barr tweeted, "I created the platform for that inclusivity and you know it. Furthermore, Zimmerman said "You would think, her kids, somebody" would be able to rein in her ongoing barrage of tweets.

He explained that Sessions should have anticipated the need for his recusal as a witness in the Russian Federation probe instead of announcing the decision after he took office, or else he should've resigned after coming to that decision.

On Monday, the Justice Department agreed to investigate "any irregularities" in Federal Bureau of Investigation tactics related to Trump's campaign.

Gowdy explained that he, "never heard the term "spy" used", in his investigation and did not see evidence of that.

GREENE: So I just want to ask, if President Bush had publicly said he wished he had a different attorney general, how would you have reacted to that?

Trump's complaints about Sessions have at times won sympathy from some friends who believe Sessions' recusal was too broad and ill-timed and undercut the positive attention from a State of the Union address the president had recently delivered.

Napolitano criticized Sessions for not informing the president about his decision to recuse himself from overseeing the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The former mayor of New York City urged that the investigation should end soon so that it doesn't affect Republican chances in November's midterm elections. "So, our jury is the American - as it should be - is the American people", he said on CNN. "The president would have every right to ask him to unrecuse himself", he added. Trump ultimately said it himself when announcing the firing.
