Tayyip Erdogan reelected Turkey's president by big margin

Had Ince, a talented orator whose rallies attracted millions of people in Turkey's Mediterranean strongholds of relative liberalism, forced Erdogan into a run-off, as he'd hoped, the opposition would have had a chance to beat him despite everything the Turkish ruler had done to skew the election system in his favor.

While Turkey of yesteryear embraced democratic values, today's Turkey under Erdogan has violated every code of human rights and every principle of a democratic form of government. A country where academics are sacked for calling for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish conflict.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said President Donald Trump had not yet found time to talk to Erdoğan, after a win that granted the Turkish leader sweeping new powers. A state of emergency was proclaimed and tens of thousands were arrested and purged by the government.

Asked by a journalist about the EU's reaction, Commission chief spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said that there would be a separate assessment from the Council meeting in Luxembourg on the fairness of the election process, taking into account the observers' reports.

Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom says Turkey "should not give others democracy lessons. not when opposition leaders are sitting in jail".

Erdogan accused the secularist CHP during the election campaign of supporting the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), which Ankara says is the political arm of the PKK.

But there was nothing to be seen of his huge final rally in Istanbul on state television. And, unlike Putin, he doesn't have a vast resource base to prop up his grand economic vision: Turkey is dependent for trade and investment on the very countries toward which Erdogan's rhetoric is the most hostile. The transition was meant to occur with the elections scheduled for November 2019.

After a conversation policy reported that the state of emergency, which expires in July 2018, will not be renewed again.

But I think we have some top players and some players who are on their way to being top players. For us, we're not focusing on the next games. "After every session we just practise".

The over 3 million government employees and other institutions that depend partly or wholly on government support were warned that they must not only vote for him, but also ensure that their relatives and friends fully lend him their political support as well. HDP strongholds were particularly badly affected.

Erdogan, 64, is seeking re-election for a five-year term and the governing Justice and Development Party, or AKP, is vying to retain its majority in parliament. Fresh from the voting booth, the country is already eyeing next year's municipal elections, widely seen as a stepping stone toward meaningful opposition. The HDP may have regained a place in the National Assembly, but the opposition hardly improved their position at all.

The stakes in this election are particularly high as the new president will be the first to enjoy enhanced powers under a new constitution agreed in a April 2017 referendum strongly backed by Erdogan. He added that there are early signs Erdogan may listen to his more experienced economic advisors and lessen his meddling in Central Bank policy, which has precipitated the fall of the Turkish lira by nearly 20 percent against the dollar since the start of the year. "It is transitioning toward a one-man regime".

Erdogan was re-elected as president on Sunday, winning 53 percent of the vote. But Turkey is not yet a dictatorship.

A large number of Turks believe that ever since Erdogan showed his support for Palestinian rights, he has become a consistent target of Western propaganda and ridicule.

Erdogan, whose mastery of political rhetoric is acknowledged even by critics, has won a dozen elections but is now fighting against the backdrop of increasing economic woes.

Turkey is not a dictatorship and nor can all AKP supporters be classed as enemies of democracy. Nor have they forgotten how poor and underdeveloped some parts of Anatolia were before the AKP came to power.

Still more issues cloud ties - such as the behavior of Erdogan's bodyguards, who have twice brawled with peaceful demonstrators in Washington - but things work out better behind the scenes. For his supporters, these grand projects represent an improvement in quality of life and a tangible sign of progress and new strength for a country that has now entered the premier league in areas such as aviation.
