Rancho Santa Fe's John Cox makes it into gubernatorial runoff with Newsom

Thanks to the state's "jungle primary" system, the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, advance to the general election.

Apart from California, voters also cast ballots Tuesday in Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. But that seemed to be more of a typical presidential boast than a realistic analysis of the California results.

Cox enters the race a long shot and hitched to President Donald Trump, who is widely unpopular in California.

Gavin Newsom speaks at his election night party as his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, watches in the background at Verso in San Francisco, California on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Such a candidate would at least have made for a heck of race. There was also a gubernatorial primary last night.

But, despite the large number of Democratic candidates who split the vote in some districts, it appears to be on track to put Democrats on the November ballot in each of those races, although final results are not yet known and might not be for several days.

Democrats feared a glut of candidates in some districts would fragment their vote and shut them out of some races where they hope to capture Republican seats in November.

That remains to be seen, as voters in seven other states went to the polls. But so far neither party appears to have suffered any major setbacks. Party Republicans strongly support the tax law that Mr. Trump signed previous year, though it is more of a drag than a lift among voters overall, the new Journal/NBC News poll shows.

"Great night for Republicans!" Female Republican governors in Alabama and Iowa will vie for their first full terms after succeeding men who resigned.

California's Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, also fared well, fending off challenges from the left. It's not clear yet if a Republican earned enough votes to oppose her in November. Democrats hope to flip several of the House seats held by California Republicans so that their party can take control of Congress.

Can Democrats take back the House and Senate?

Warriors clear Andre Iguodala to play in Game 3 of finals
A bounce here, a couple stops there, the Cavs could be leading in these finals and the conversation would be different. Playing the role of LeBron James on Wednesday night was Kevin Durant . "It's been a tough series for Kyle", Love said.

In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, an ex-military helicopter pilot, won the Democratic primary in a congressional race that promises to be a key battleground in November.

If Grisham wins, she would be the state's second Latino state executive.

Deb Haaland, who secured the democratic nomination for congress in New Mexico's first congressional district, will likely be the first-ever Native-American woman to serve in Congress, as her district is a safe seat for Democrats. And New Jersey has four competitive House races going on this year. In the 39th District the Republican outpolled all other candidates.

Menendez's opponent in November will be Republican businessman Bob Hugin, who won 75 percent in his primary.

Even though some races were too close to call, Ryan Costello, a retiring Pennsylvania Republican, came out of the GOP conference this morning saying his party was optimistic at where they stood for the general election. Thanks to redistricting, a Democratic and Republican House incumbent were forced to face off, and the Republican won.

Democrats targeted seven congressional districts won by Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election that are now held by Republicans. Even though Republican Diane Harkey was the top finisher, the next three finishers on the list are all Democrats, with Mike Levin finishing in second. The second spot remained up for grabs.

Newman narrowly won the traditionally Republican Orange County-based district in the 2016 election, and both parties saw him as vulnerable.

The Republican National Committee suggested that Mr. Trump was looking at turnout numbers that showed enthusiasm for some of those Republican candidates.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well. "Republicans ended up winning in all of the seven seats they were trying to target.my numbers are well above we thought they would be and the Republican nearly made it in the general election in my race as well, so I'd say Republicans that were very motivated given tax cuts and the economy. that's something that's playing well in my community".
