Mohamed Salah mulls quitting Egypt after Chechnya controversy

Salah was pictured with Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who has been accused of torture, prior to the tournament beginning.

But, according to the report, Salah now feels used by Kadyrov for political gain and does not want to be associated in that way.

Due to an injury inflicted by Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the UEFA Champions League Final, Salah was not fit to play in Egypt's World Cup opener, a loss to Uruguay.

Their journey in Russian Federation will come to an end against Saudi Arabia on Monday, with both sides eager to register their first points at the World Cup when they meet at the Volgograd Arena.

Given his stellar club season and central role in Egypt's qualification campaign, Mohamed Salah deserved the World Cup stage more than most.

Salah is expected to play for Egypt in their final group game against Saudi Arabia on Monday but his long-term future with the national team is uncertain. I didn't invite Mo Salah or the Egyptian team.

'Mohamed Salah thanked us for the surprisingly warm and good reception, excellent attitude to the team, excellent living conditions and training, ' Kadyrov posted on Russian social network site VK. The Chechen leader posed for pictures with Salah while pinning a medal on his chest.

It has been claimed that Kadyrov is looking to use sport as a means to bolster his image, and that he is using Salah to enhance his reach towards potential allies in North Africa and the Middle East. Kadyrov is looking to further diplomatic relations between the semi-autonomous state over which he rules and foreign governments, while also increasing foreign investment in the republic.
