Is Microsoft acquiring GitHub?

Microsoft is buying code-sharing site GitHub, say reports

Now, although the rumoured acquisition is yet to be confirmed by either party, fellow web-based version control hosting service provider Gitlab appears to be ramping up its efforts to lure Github users who might not be entirely happy with Microsoft's reported acquisition of the company.

GitHub raised $250 million in 2015 and was last valued at $2 billion.

It's worth noting that Microsoft's journey started with creating software development tools and the company is known to lure developers from time-to-time to boost its software business.

Frank Shaw, a spokesman for Microsoft, declined to comment. One closely watched aspect of this deal will be whether fierce competitors like Amazon Web Services and Google continue to store code on a Microsoft-owned property.

GitHub is an essential tool for coders. Last August, the company said it wanted a replacement for CEO Chris Wanstrath - one of GitHub's founders. While GitHub's losses have been significant - it lost $66 million over three quarters in 2016 - it had revenue of $98 million in nine months of that year. Chief Business Officer Julio Avalos joined the company's board of directors and now serves as the day-to-day face and leadership of the company, Bloomberg noted.

GitHub may soon fall under the wide umbrella of Microsoft.

GitHub now has over 27 million software developers contributing to over 80 million repositories of code. As Nadella increasingly moves the company away from complete dependence on the Windows operating system to more in-house development on Linux, the company needs new ways to connect with the broader developer community.

The companies have reportedly had several discussions about partnership in recent years, but those close to GitHub's decision told media outlets that talks have grown increasingly more serious.
