Twitter announces data breach, encourages password change

Twitter says its users should change their passwords which may have been exposed

"Twitter very much did the right thing here: They had no hard evidence that these passwords had been spilled outside their walls, but chose to go public to be sure", Richard Ford, chief scientist at cybersecurity company Forcepoint, said.

Twitter wasn't hacked, but it still really wants you to change your password.

If you are a Twitter user, change your password urgently.

However the social media site also confirmed that the passwords were mainly exposed to some of their employees and that users need not worry about their data, which remains safe. "We recently found a bug that stored passwords unmasked in an internal log".

Users receive a warning message when logging in to Twitter.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter's chief technology officer, said in a blog post that Twitter has fixed the issue and that there were no signs that anyone had breached or misused the passwords. This allows our systems to validate your account credentials without revealing your password. As a solution, the developers have "removed the passwords and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again". Twitter reported that it was not a security breach as nobody was able to access the log where the plain text passwords were stored.

Despite Twitter's bold assurances, it is hard to ignore past occasions when large amounts of Twitter passwords have appeared for sale. For this reason, it is vital that you update all your accounts with the same password. It should be pointed out that reusing passwords across different services is not recommended for user safety.

The company wouldn't provide an exact number of the passwords that were stored without encryption in the log. Password managers are applications that can generate long, unique passwords for every service you use, and remember them all so you don't have to. This is the single best action you can take to increase your account security.
