Travel Warning: Another Terror Attack in Indonesia

Militant shot dead in attack on police HQ in Indonesia's Riau province

Four attackers wielding samurai swords targeted a police station in western Indonesia on Wednesday morning, killing at least one officer, police said.

The perpetrators in the sword attack on the police headquarters of Indonesia's Riau province on Wednesday have links with the Islamic State (IS), a police officer said.

Four men were shot and killed as they staged an attack on a police headquarters that left one officer dead and two wounded.

No group has taken responsibility so far.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organisation on a U.S. State Department terrorist list that is reckoned to have drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathisers of Islamic State.

The attack comes after a series of suicide bombings by Islamist militants targeting churches and a police building in Indonesia's second-biggest of city of Surabaya over the past few days.

"They had the same teacher and they regularly met for Koran recital every week", said East Java police chief Machfud Arifin.

Teachers have also slammed lawmakers for bypassing raises for the state's most experienced educators. Were I still working with student teachers, I would be urging them not to seek jobs in your state.

The attack took place around 9 a.m., when officers were preparing to hold a press conference about an earlier drug raid in the city.

The attacks are the worst in the world's biggest Muslim-majority country since the bombing of tourist-packed restaurants in Bali in 2005.

Local journalist Doddy Vladimir, who was at scene of the attack, said he saw a white Toyota Avanza van hit the headquarter's fence at around 9am (02:00 GMT).

Police have been frequent targets of mostly low-level attacks by local militants, including a 2017 suicide bombing at a bus station in Jakarta that killed three police officers.

Following the 2002 Bali bombings, it had been widely praised for its sustained anti-terrorism crackdown.

In the ensuing chaos, at least two suspected terrorists, both wearing balaclavas, were spotted getting out of the vehicle wielding sharp weapons and attacking police officers.
