In a tweet earlier in the day, Trump called the North's response to his pullout from the nuclear talks "very good news" and said that "we will soon see where it will lead".

Trump also struck a conciliatory tone at times, thanking Kim for his "time, patience and effort" on the negotiations, and for releasing the three American hostages.

USA officials appeared to be pressing ahead in the belief that the summit remains on the table.

"We were informed that the meeting was requested by North Korea, but that to us is totally irrelevant", Mr Trump wrote. "And if they are ready to do that then ... we're certainly ready to have those conversations", she said.

He cancelled the summit on Thursday, blaming the North's "open hostility".

At an worldwide economic forum in St Petersburg on Friday, Chinese Vice-President Wang Qishan said it was vitally important for the U.S. and North Korean leaders to meet to maintain regional stability, and the cancellation was just a "brief interlude".

Trump scrapped the meeting, planned for Singapore, in a letter to Kim on Thursday after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by U.S. officials demanding unilateral disarmament.

"Everybody plays games", Trump declared on Friday. But it also followed escalating frustration - and newly antagonistic rhetoric - from North Korea over comments from Trump aides about US expectations for the North's "denuclearization".

Trump's announcement came a day after Pyongyang hardened its rhetoric, calling comments by Vice President Mike Pence "ignorant and stupid".

North Korea had said that it's still willing to sit for talks with the United States "at any time".

. Moon urged direct talks between Trump and Kim to get things back on track.

A White House official quoted by Reuters news agency described the comments about Mr Pence as the "last straw".

Earlier on Twitter, Mr Trump hadcalled the North's reaction "warm and productive" and expressed hope for "long and enduring prosperity and peace". "So I'm confident that peace and security on the Korean peninsula can be maintained".

Earlier on Friday, speaking to reporters outside the White House in Washington, the U.S. president indicated that the summit could still be salvaged, saying: "We're gonna see what happens".

And it's between North Korea and the USA right now.

"Whether it was to maintain good will with the South, or whether it was the case that they realized, "Our great leader wants to move ahead with summit, and perhaps our language put that in jeopardy" is unclear, he said.

The heavily-amended letter condemned Trump for being repetitive, "pandering" to his audience, inappropriate vocabulary and nonsensical turn of phrase.

"If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write", the president wrote to Kim.

A White House team was set to fly to Singapore this weekend to continue logistical planning for the meeting. There, former leader Colonel Gaddafi gave up his nascent nuclear programme only for him to be killed by Western-backed rebels a few years later.

In Pyongyang, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's criticisms of certain US officials had been a reaction to American rhetoric and that the current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit.
