Kuala Lumpur-Singapore is now the busiest global route in the world, knocking former leader Hong Kong-Taipei from the top spot according to the latest figures from industry analyst OAG.

Research has shown that more than 30,500 flights between the two cities took place in the year to February.

Other industry experts noted that the expansion of low-priced carriers in Asia has significantly boosted the number of air services between Asian cities, including Singapore-Kuala Lumpur and Singapore-Jakarta. That's the equivalent of 84 flights a day in a city state with a population of just 5.6 million.

Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said routes between Toronto, New York and Chicago are used frequently by business travellers, as well as vacationers, and Pearson is a major hub to other destinations.

"The carriers are Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines, SilkAir, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, Malindo Airways and Scoot".

Rounding off the top five are the routes between Hong Kong and Shanghai Pudong with 21,888 flights in the past year and Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur, with 19,849 flights.

High of 53 with afternoon storms and showers today in Longmont
Friday night , it will be mostly clear with a low of 54, according to the weather service. Highs this week range from the upper-80s on Monday to the low 80s later this week.

This is followed by the Jakarta to Singapore route with 27,304 flights.

The route between Dublin and London was the busiest in Europe with more than 14,000 flights in the 12-month period.

John Grant, a senior analyst with OAG said: 'These airline routes are among the most competitive in the world.

The flight between NY and Canada's biggest city, Toronto, is the busiest route outside of Asia.

According to the report released by the OAG, 14 of the world's busiest 20 routes, including eight of the top 10 routes, are between Asian cities.

However, even the busiest worldwide routes can not compete with the most popular domestic air journeys.
