Amber Rudd is thought to have been backing Mrs May ahead of a crunch showdown on the customs union in the Brexit'war Cabinet sub-committee

Ms. Rudd's resignation is the latest fallout from the Windrush scandal.

These policies are now under fire for ensnaring the Windrush generation - with fears that European Union citizens could be similarly targeted post-Brexit.

Following Javid's promotion, the Downing Street also announced that former Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire will return to the cabinet as Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary.

Sajid Javid has been named as the Home Secretary replacing Amber Rudd following her resignation. Critics say that she is behind overly harsh immigration policies.

May replied that she believed Rudd had given her evidence "in good faith"; but that she could "understand why, now you have had chance to review the advice that you have received on this issue, you have made the decision you have made, and taken responsibility for inadvertently misleading the home affairs select committee".

She did not answer when questioned outside her home if she had fallen on Prime Minister Theresa May's sword.

Ms Rudd stepped down as a cabinet minister on Sunday after leaked documents revealed that the Home Office had been set targets - despite the Tory MP previously claiming there were none.

The furor began when the Guardian newspaper reported that some people from the Caribbean who have lived in Britain for decades had been refused medical care or threatened with deportation because they couldn't produce paperwork proving their right to reside in the country.

She also confirmed that a compensation scheme will be set up for people who have suffered loss or damages due to their inability to show they remained in Britain legally and to access services.

Describing Javid as one of the most experienced ministers around the cabinet table, the spokesperson said he would need those skills in his new job.

Asked if Mrs May allowed Ms Rudd "to fall on her sword" to protect herself, she replied: "Amber resigned because of information that she had given to Parliament which proved to be inaccurate".

Invited to Britain to help it rebuild after World War II, they were given a legal right to remain by a 1971 law.

In recent weeks, Rudd and May have apologised repeatedly to the Windrush generation, saying all pre-1973 Commonwealth immigrants who don't already have British citizenship will get it, and those affected will get compensation.

A 2017 letter to the PM in which Ms Rudd spoke of her plans to increase removals "by more than 10 per cent over the next few years" did not relate to a target but to an "aim over a non-specific period", the Prime Minister's spokesman said.

"The suspicion must be that this is part of a continuing cover-up to avoid the Prime Minister's own role in what took place being exposed".
