Ingram will be eligible to return to the Saints on Monday, October 1. The four-game suspension is for first-time offenders in the league.

Ingram, 28, will miss games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants.

Despite the suspension, Ingram will still be allowed to participate in everything the Saints do this offseason, which means he'll be at training camp and he'll be allowed to play in each of the team's four preseason games. The suspension could prove even more costly if he was angling for a lucrative contract extension before the season kicked off. His finest campaign came past year, when Ingram and rookie Alvin Kamara became the first backfield tandem to each eclipse the 1,500-yard mark with scrimmage yards. In the 2017 season, Ingram earned his second career Pro Bowl nod after recording a career-high 1,124 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns, while also hauling in 58 catches for 416 receiving yards. However, it was expected to remain a 1A/1B situation after that worked out so well past year for the NFC South champions. The Saints also have a more experienced backup, Jonathan Williams, on the roster. Kamara will be well worth a first-round pick in this summer's fantasy drafts. May.

With Kamara and Ingram both playing at a high level in 2017 and staying relatively healthy, the Saints rarely needed to go to a third-string back last season.

Ingram was drafted by the Saints in the first round in 2011 and has established himself as the team's lead back over the past few years.
