The candidates that emerge Tuesday night from bruising and expensive primary battles in Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia will provide answers to key questions about races crucial to determining which parties will control the U.S. House and Senate after November. That in itself has echoes of Alabama, where Roy Moore proclaimed himself the most Trumpian candidate in the GOP primary despite Trump's endorsement of Luther Strange. In a Tweet Monday morning, Trump attempted to appeal to the sensibilities of West Virginia Republicans, who voted Trump into office in 2016 by almost 42 points.

In urging a vote against Blankenship, Trump follows in the footsteps of his son - Donald Trump Jr. - who, at the end of last week, tweeted: "I hate to lose". Blankenship is a former CEO of Massey Energy who until recently was serving a yearlong sentence for a misdemeanor conviction over his involvement in the deadliest USA mine explosion in four decades. In 2012, faced with a almost impossible re-election in a red state, McCaskill operated a secret campaign on behalf of Tea Party candidate Todd Akin in the primary, knowing he would be easier to beat than establishment candidate John Brunner.

"The President is a very busy man and he doesn't know me and he doesn't know how flawed my two main opponents are in this primary ... I will not fail you if I get to D.C. ... and I can tell you, I am more capable of representing you than anyone you ever sent to the U.S. Senate".

"Swamp captain Mitch McConnell has created millions of jobs for China people", Blankenship says in a recent ad, a direct-to-camera 30-second spot that defines the coal baron's attacks on the majority leader.

"To the great people of West Virginia we have, together, a really great chance to keep making a big difference. The establishment needs to stand down in this race, and I will beat Manchin in the fall". It's unclear, nevertheless, how powerful Mr. Trump's intervention will probably take a state where lots of ancient votes have been throw.

McConnell is married to Trump's Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, whose parents immigrated to the U.S.in 1961 and are both USA citizens.

Trump tweeted early Monday morning about the race. "While doing so, Mitch has gotten rich", Blankenship continued.

The ad also drew criticism for the use of the term "China family", to describe McConnell's in-laws.

Coal miners are an influential political constituency in West Virginia and Trump's White House victory came amid promises to revive the ailing coal industry.

The president had offered Moore his full-throated support in the days leading to the special election in the deep red Cotton State.
