The president was addressing the NRA gathering almost three months after a deadly shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

Kasky was one of the students who survived the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Valentine's Day.

"Thanks to your activism and dedication, you have an administration fighting to protect your Second Amendment and we will protect your Second Amendment", he said.

Kasky said, "Well, you know, he was saying some things that implied that he was stepping forward into the right direction for gun safety in this country, and then he had a meeting with some NRA officials, a private meeting, and afterwards he came and claimed that the Second Amendment was under siege and he was going to defend it".

In a separate meeting with lawmakers following the shooting, Trump vowed to get tough on guns, potentially expanding background checks, taking guns away from the mentally ill, and raising the minimum age for purchase.

Attendees sing the National Anthem at the NRA convention. His gun comments were woven into a campaign-style speech that touched on the Russian Federation probe, the 2016 campaign, his efforts in North Korea and Iran and his fight against illegal immigration. But this year's speech in Dallas came as the issue of gun violence takes on new urgency after one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. "So I don't necessarily think Trump is scared of the NRA, I think Trump is very enamored with the financial support that the NRA gives him".

Trump has long enjoyed strong backing from the NRA, which spent about $30 million in support of his presidential campaign.

Trump spoke about gun laws in France during a free-wheeling address to the National Rifle Association in Texas on Friday, suggesting the atrocity might have been prevented if citizens were allowed to buy arms.

One of the Parkland student survivors, David Hogg, criticized Trump's appearance in advance. The NRA has fiercely defended America's gun ownership rights for many years, citing the Second Amendment. "It proves that his heart and his wallet are in the same place".

"I have nothing against the NRA members that are law-abiding gun owners. It doesn't make sense that I have to wait until I'm 21 to get a handgun, but I can get this weapon at 18".

Trump initially expressed enthusiasm for measures to close loopholes for gun buyers seeking to avoid the background check system, raise the age limit for buying rifles, and find ways to seize guns temporarily from people reported to be unsafe.

President Donald Trump, who endorsed Abbott during his Friday speech, similarly suggested gun control was ridiculous.
