Pyongyang granted the 3 men "amnesty", a USA official said, and they are now on their way back to the United States with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Tony Kim was detained at Pyongyang's airport in April 2017 and accused of unspecified "hostile acts" against the regime.

But Wednesday's announcement gave Trump a chance to tout a diplomatic achievement just a day after his decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal drew heavy criticism from European allies and others. "They seem to be in good health", Mr Trump said in tweet.

Talk of the captives' release had increased as the us and North Korea's regime engaged in rare talks - and worked to arrange a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

The U.S. president also tweeted "Date & Place set" on Pompeo's second visit to the DPRK, referring to his anticipated summit with Kim.

North Korean media, for their part, didn't include such remarks in their reports on Kim's meeting, the Guardian noted.

"We - the secretary - will be listening for signs from North Korea that things have substantively changed since Kim's declaration on New Year's Eve to mass produce nuclear warheads and the means to deliver them", said a senior official.

Pompeo replied: "That's great", according to the official.

He noted that the North Koreans were disappointed that he did not come bearing a "breakthrough" from the USA government, but did not detail what offers the hosts were hoping for.

Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak-song and Kim Sang Duk were freed during U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's second visit to the North Korean capital of Pyongyang in two months.

In an interview with CNN during his detention, Kim Dong Chul said he used to live in Fairfax, Va., and moved to China, near the border with North Korea, to work in worldwide trade and in the hotel business. They were the latest in a series of Americans who have been detained by North Korea in recent years for seemingly small offenses and typically freed when senior USA officials or statesmen personally visited to bail them out.

Pompeo, who first traveled to North Korea as Central Intelligence Agency chief in early April, is only the second sitting secretary of state to visit the reclusive nation with which the USA is still technically at war. But he did not offer specifics.

The White House says President Donald Trump views North Korea's release of three American citizens "as a positive gesture of goodwill".

"We must take the recent momentum towards denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula and towards peace and security in Northeast Asia, and, cooperating even further with worldwide society, make sure this is linked to concrete action by North Korea", Abe told a news conference after the meeting.

The White House said all three men were able to walk unassisted onto a US Air Force plane that carried them and the secretary of state out of North Korea. "I have high expectations the USA will play a very big role in establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula", he said. When a reporter asked him back on March 8 whether he would authorize negotiations, Trump said, "it's nearly beyond that".

At the time, USA officials insisted that their release "must not be related or used to loosen the main issue of denuclearization", the source said, but that message seems to have changed in recent days, according to a source at the National Security Council, who said the development would be viewed as a goodwill gesture ahead of the planned summit with Kim Jong Un. He died days later.

Warmbier's death escalated U.S. Tony Kim, who had been living in North Korea with his wife, taught for a time at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.

The upcoming U.S. -North Korea summit has sparked a flurry of diplomacy, with Japan, South Korea and China holding a high-level meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday. Trump is hoping to now make headway against North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
