Ireland finally make Test debut after opening day washout against Pakistan

The match against Pakistan at Malahide had to be abandoned

Boyd Rankin, the 15th man and the first since Kepler Wessels (Australia and South Africa) 25 years ago to play Test cricket for two nations after making a lone appearance for England, had the honour of taking Ireland's first Test wicket.

There was drama at a sun-drenched Malahide even before the wickets fell, with Pakistan debutant Imam-ul-Haq injured off the first ball of the match.

Ireland won the toss and bowled and their first delivery in Test cricket proved eventful as Imam ul-Haq suffered an injury when scrambling for a quick single.

Pakistan skipper Azhar Ali was squared up by a Rankin delivery and edged one to his Irish counterpart at slips. Diving to make his crease as Tyrone Kane tried to throw down the stumps, Imam - nephew of Pakistan great Inzamam - collided with onrushing wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien.

When the players left the pitch shortly before 5.30pm just before the heavens opened - play was abandoned for the day 20 minutes later - Pakistan had moved on to 268 for six, with Faheem Ashraf on 61 not out and Shadab Khan unbeaten on 52.

Pakistan will start Sunday looking to push towards a total past 400, and in Shadab and Ashraf, they look to have two talented young batsmen, although Shadab's leg-spin may yet be his biggest contribution to the match.

The left-hander, who came into this match following fifties in Pakistan's two warm-up fixtures, against Kent and Northamptonshire, square-drove Murtagh for a stylish four.

The century stand for the seventh wicket helped Pakistan shift the initiative, which rested with Ireland for most parts of the day, in their favour.

But, in hindsight, given what the forecasts had predicted, both teams, especially Ireland, would be happy with the amount of cricket that eventually took place.

The tourists recovered but Asad Shafiq (62) was one of four wickets to fall after lunch to leave Pakistan 159-6.

Shafiq square-cut Kane for four, with left-hander Haris glancing Thompson for a legside boundary.

Shafiq went on to complete a 107-ball fifty when he pulled Rankin for a single.

Porterfield used all five of his seam bowlers before lunch but it was Pakistan that carried the momentum into the break, going in on 67 for two with Haris on 28 and Shafiq 22.

Imam was lbw for seven to a Murtagh delivery that came back into him.
