Hearing decision to be handed down today — Cardinal George Pell

Cardinal George Pell will find out on Tuesday if he will stand trial over historical sex offence charges

Some protesters shouted as he arrived.

The trial will be held in Melbourne and lawyers for Cardinal Pell have indicated he will plead not guilty.

The hearing has received a huge amount of attention both in Australia and overseas.

During the pre-trial hearing, Prosecutor Mark Gibson had said none of the complainants had resiled from their allegations against Pell under cross-examination and Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Chris Reed refuted Richter's suggestions of serious flaws in the police investigation.

The court was closed to the public and media while the accusers gave evidence, as is standard practice in Victoria in sexual assault cases.

Richter told Wallington in his final submissions two weeks ago that the complainants might have testified against one of the church's most powerful men to punish him for failing to act against abuse by clerics.

The magistrate has discharged some charges against Pell.

There have been crowds of police, press and onlookers outside the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Pell went on to become the Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996. Pell's face has shown little emotion while attending court during his hard-fought and extraordinarily long preliminary hearing.

For Pell, the charges are a threat to his freedom, his reputation and his career. A number of sex-abuse scandals have dented the Catholic Church's image across the globe.

WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum announced on Monday that he's leaving the company . Facebook bought the company in 2014 for $19 billion in cash and stock.

So far, Francis has withheld judgment of Pell, saying he wants to wait for justice to run its course.

But over the following weeks, details of the allegations against Cardinal Pell emerged.

His case has coincided with an Australian national inquiry into child sexual abuse, ordered in 2012 after a decade of pressure to investigate widespread allegations of institutional paedophilia.

The charges he has been committed on relate to more than one victim.

The precise nature of the allegations, made by several people, has not been made public.

Pell appeared before it three times, once in person and twice via video-link from Rome over the Church's handling of complaints against paedophile priests. He has denied those accusations.

Pell's defence raised questions during the pre-trial hearing about police procedure, the reliability of witnesses' memories and their psychological condition.

He has taken leave from that role while facing legal proceedings in Australia.
