More than 1,700 residents have evacuated from the communities of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens and are coping with the fact that they may not be able to return home for a while.

At least 100 people were staying in shelters on Thursday night.

The lava flow has prompted the mandatory evacuation of about 1,700 residents of Leilani Estates.

"When you are exposed to that level of SO2 in the Leilani Estates area you need more protection than we have available to us", she said. Lava flows from the volcano have covered 125 square km, according to the USGS.

Stephen Clapper was one of hundreds of residents to flee the threats from the volcanic eruption.

Resident Ikaika Marzo told Hawaii News Now that he saw "fountains" of lava as high as 125 feet (38 m).

"It is quite usual for Kilauea to erupt, not at the summit, but through cracks on the volcano", Eleonora Rivalta of the German Research Centre for Geosciences told AFP news agency.

Images posted by the USGS showed red hot lava rising higher than the tops of trees.

But burnt homes and structures are not the only consequences of lava. On Friday, lava spatter was being launched over power lines.

Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes and one of five on the island, has been in constant eruption for 35 years. In 2014, lava torched a house and blanketed a cemetery near Leilani Estates, and nearly 30 years ago, the entire town of Kalapana was slowly buried in lava over a year.

County, State and Federal agencies are preparing for a possible eruption amid continuous earthquakes along the East Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano.

Within the many years since, the lava movement has buried dozens of sq. miles of land and destroyed many houses. A magnitude-6.9 natural disaster - Hawaii's largest in more than 40 years - hit the area Friday. Although the quake could be felt across much of the archipelago, the worst shaking occurred in an area with no neighborhoods or businesses.

Almost 30 years ago, lava slowly covered an entire town, Kalapana, over the period of about a year.

When that pressure built up, the surface around that had to move - producing sudden earth movement on a fault plane that separates the ancient sea floor and Kilauea volcano. It is one of five now active volcanoes on Hawaii Island, sometimes known as the archipelago's Big Island.

KHON reported that some viewers on the island of Oahu, about 200 miles away, felt the shaking. Spokeswoman Rhea Lee-Moku said power has been restored to about half of the customers, but sulfur gas levels in some areas are beyond what Hawaii Electric Light deems safe so they can not work in those places.

Kauahikaua said that the current seismic activity is similar to what preceded an eruption of Kilauea Volcano in the lower Puna district in 1955.
