Feinstein's A 'No' Against CIA Nominee

Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly announced on Saturday that he would support Gina Haspel as CIA Director, becoming the second Democrat to offer his approval and all but ensuring that she will be confirmed. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who announced his support earlier this week-Haspel is on track to sail through the Senate, provided that no other Republicans join Sens. During her confirmation hearing, Haspel pledged to abide by the current law that forbids those methods and that she would reject an order from Trump to use those techniques against a terrorism suspect now.

During another high-profile confirmation fight, Trump's last-minute overture to Paul helped pave the way for Mike Pompeo to win his job as secretary of state.

"I think the techniques we used were not torture". In her testimony, Haspel defended the use of torture under her watch, saying the decision was necessary in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Haspel has the support of committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., who said, "She has the right skill set, experience and judgment to lead one of our nation's most critical agencies".

Haspel has been sharply criticized for her role in the Bush administration's enhanced interrogation program - considered by many to be torture.

Republicans hold a 51-to-49 Senate majority, but McCain is battling brain cancer in Arizona. Haspel was a chief of the base at Thailand at a covert detention site where terror suspects were waterboarded due to which she knew what it was like to be a close confirmation vote in the full Senate.

Haspel has received strong endorsements from a string of former Central Intelligence Agency directors, including Leon Panetta and John Brennan who served during the Obama Administration. In his piece, Paul questions her involvement in the case of Maher Arar, a Canadian engineer whose transfer to and torture in Syria was recounted in a 2005 New Yorker article.

Washington:The CIA continues to be very concerned about potential contacts between Pakistani nuclear scientists and extremist groups and is monitoring them, US President Donald Trump's nominee to head the agency has said.

Trump was joined at the IN campaign rally by Pence, a former IN governor, and urged GOP voters to mobilize and prevent Democrats from regaining control of Congress.
