Australia first entered the competition in 2015, but the song contest has been hugely popular there since it was first broadcast in 1974.

As "a proud Brit" representing the United Kingdom on Saturday night, SuRie will be singing her song Storm.

The grand final will take place on Saturday 12 May.

This is because the BBC is still part of the European Broadcasting Union which organises the contest, and EU membership is not required.

Ryan represented Ireland, which has more Eurovision wins (seven) than any other country, but has not won the competition since 1996.

SuRie and her song Storm, written by Nicole Blair, Gil Lewis and Sean Hargreaves, will head to Lisbon in May after being chosen in a live show.

Ryan O'Shaughnessy will perform "Together" in Lisbon, after getting through the semi-final last night.

On the day of the first semi-final of the main favorite of bookmakers was the representative of Cyprus, Eleni, Furara.
