"After careful consideration, I will support Ms. Haspel's nomination to lead the agency to which she has dedicated her career", Donnelly added.

Donnelly came under attack from Trump at a rally in IN on Thursday, two days after the state's primary election determined that his Republican opponent in November will be former in lawmaker Mike Braun.

Haspel is expected to get the nod from the GOP-controlled Senate intelligence committee, but senators are still deciding whether they will vote to confirm her when the full Senate votes in upcoming weeks.

The Hoosier senior senator becomes the second Democrat to publicly announce their backing for the controversial nominee.

In his statement, Donnelly said he talked to Haspel about her involvement with the interrogation program.

Donnelly met with Haspel this week and had what he describes as a "tough, frank" conversation with her. Democrats have also complained that the agency has been selective in its declassification of information about her.

"I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense", McCain said.

Haspel, currently the CIA's deputy director, would replace Mike Pompeo, who is now Secretary of State.

WEATHER ALERT DAY: Severe storms possible Thursday night
Thursday's storm potential will be followed by warm, clear weather through the weekend, according to the weather service forecast. Severe thunderstorms with strong winds and hail are possible Thursday afternoon across Central Maryland, meteorologists said.

"Torturing people is immoral, and it's something we shouldn't do".

With two Democrats now backing her nomination-the first to do so was Sen.

With Donnelly's support, Senate Republicans, who hold a slim 51-49 majority, have a chance to reach the necessary votes in a floor vote.

Ms. Haspel, a 33-year veteran of the agency, has spent much of her career in clandestine service.

The Intelligence Committee's damning report in 2014 of the CIA's torture program concluded that the interrogation of detainees was far more brutal than the CIA disclosed and that top officials misled Congress, the Bush administration and the public about what they were doing. Even if they all oppose her and Flake joins the opposition, Haspel should have 50 votes for her confirmation.

In her nomination hearing, Haspel refused to give clear answers. President Trump told ABC News in January 2017 that he "absolutely" believes that torture "works" and would consider using it again if the Central Intelligence Agency director and Defense secretary wanted to do so.

Republican Senator Rand Paul admits his relationship with Senator John McCain has not always been good, but he's with him and against one of the President's nominees.

With a statement on Saturday that doesn't once mention the word "torture", Sen.
