Tear gas surrounds protesters during clashes with French riot police at the May Day labour union rally in Paris, France, May 1, 2018.

The interior minister, Gérard Collomb, promised to send more police to future gatherings.

"These individuals were motivated by the desire to disrupt the union meeting, to derail the day", he said.

The police hurled teargas at the protesters and also dispersed them with water cannons.

Mr Delpuech said besides damage to property - several shops were looted and torched, as were half a dozen vehicles - one police officer and three demonstrators were injured in the clashes.

"For the next demonstrations there will be even more security forces, this time with the intention of totally separating protesters from those who have come to smash things up", he said.

Opposition figures seized upon Macron's absence - on a visit to Australia - to paint an image of disorder in a country without a leader amid criticism that police did not act quickly enough to pacify the violence.

"I'm doing what I said I would", he said during a recent television interview to mark the first anniversary of his election on May 7.

'Those who wear hoods are the enemies of democracy'. "There is a state that's being run and it will continue to react".

Olivier Faure of the Socialist party accused Macron's government of feeding radical behaviour by pursuing what he called "all-out victory" over trade unions opposed to his public sector overhaul.

Further demonstrations are planned later this week, in protest against economic reform plans by French President Emmanuel Macron. Every year, people across the globe take to the streets on International Workers' Day, or May Day.
