Red Cross aiming to install 100000 smoke alarms in 16 days, volunteers needed

The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign is making a difference by having installed more than one million smoke alarms across the nation. The Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014 to end these tragedies and save lives. Red Cross volunteer Mark McLoughlin joins WBSM's Jim Phillips to discuss the program, and how Fall River residents can get involved. A Red Cross volunteer will also help each family set up a home fire escape plan in case of an incident. "The American Red Cross wants to improve the odds and save lives".

American Red Cross volunteers Saturday helped install new smoke detectors at mobile home parks in the Mineral Wells area.

Jackson is considered a high-risk city when it comes to fire deaths.

"Home fires are the biggest disaster threat we face, killing an average of seven people in this country every day", said Charlie Maltbie, regional disaster officer for the Indiana Region of the American Red Cross. "Sadly, children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives".

If you have a fire smoke alarms can cut your risk of dying in a fire almost in half. The event will conclude at 2 p.m. with lunch and wrap up.

About two-thirds of those happen because the homes don't have working smoke detectors.

"I think it was still working, but it was over 10 years old".

The central Iowa chapter has already installed almost 2,000 smoke alarms so far this year, and has helped those who believed their systems were infallible.
